Male and Female Foundation Acupuncture Programmes

Twelve Week Female Foundation Acupuncture Programme

This programme has been created for women who are either scheduled to undergo IVF, IUI or want to optimise their chances of natural conception. It is used to prepare mind and body for an upcoming ART procedure, or to rebuild general health in between an unsuccessful procedure and the next cycle. It includes 12 acupuncture sessions and a detailed initial consultation.

The Chinese medicine practitioner aims, during the first consultation, to determine the nature of the disharmony by taking a detailed medical history by looking at the tongue, taking the pulses, and reviewing your consultant’s notes, all of which is used to make a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) diagnosis with which to treat you.

Treatment aims will be discussed during this time, together with the benefits and understanding the use of Chinese herbal medicine as an optional extra to this programme.

Patients who begin this process are encouraged to ask their partner (if applicable) to attend the initial consultation with them so they are supported both at home and by the practitioner during treatment.

If you are then due to embark on an IVF schedule we recommend using our Acupuncture IVF Programme during the procedure, and if successful our Pregnancy Acupuncture Programme may be appropriate depending on your individual needs.

Acupuncture IVF Programme

This programme consists of six acupuncture sessions designed for women who would like to use acupuncture to support their bodies and minds during their IVF procedure.

Session 1 - Initial Treatment

In this session, a personalised consultation is followed by a treatment. This treatment is done after the monitoring scan which can occur between days 8-10. This scan assesses follicle growth and endometrial thickness and the results of this scan will be taken into consideration during the acupuncture treatment. This treatment is designed to optimise the follicle growth and/or endometrial thickness as well as relax the patient so that the egg collection is as easy as possible.

Session 2 - Post Egg Collection

This treatment will take place just after egg collection. This treatment will aim to aid post-operative recuperation and reduce internal swelling and abdominal bloating. We aim to aid this healing process in order to help direct the body’s available resources to implant the embryo when the time comes.

Session 3 & 4 – Pre and Post Embryo Transfer

We recommend an acupuncture treatment before and after embryo transfer to improve blood circulation to the uterus thereby encouraging the embryo to secure itself inside the body. Studies during IVF have shown that pre ovulatory uterus lining thickness and ultrasound appearance is predictive of embryo implantation results. Anything less than 9-mm thickness, is associated with about a 5-fold reduction in live birth rate per embryo transfer. Women with poor uterus lining development can have a history of unexplained IVF failure or early recurrent miscarriage.
Using Chinese medicine increases the thickness and the quality of the lining of the uterus. The sessions are also designed to relax the body and mind for the procedure which can elicit nerves and excitement. Ideally, this is recommended on the same day as transfer close to your embryo transfer appointment.

Session 5 & 6 - Implantation Treatments (4-7 days after transfer)

If the embryo is a strong one, and the development of the endometrium is good, it is expected to produce a successful implantation. At this stage, bar ensuring the embryos are transferred at the right time - IVF has little more influence. However acupuncture and Chinese medicine can influence blood flow to the uterine lining the hope of encouraging implantation, as can aspirin, which is now prescribed as part of many IVF protocols. In the weeks after the embryo transfer we recommend at least one more weekly acupuncture treatment before you take a pregnancy test, to relax and support you emotionally and support the blood flow.

Acupuncture IUI Programme

As with the IVF Acupuncture Programme these acupuncture sessions are tailored to complement different stages of the IUI process. It is usually recommended that prior to the IUI schedule some building blocks have already been put into place, which may mean preparing with the Female or Male Foundation Treatments.

Session 1 - Promote Growth of Follicles

In this session, a personalised consultation is followed by a treatment. This treatment is done after the monitoring scan which can occur between days 8-10 (if part of your clinics protocol). This scan assesses follicle growth and endometrial thickness and the results of this scan will be taken into consideration during the acupuncture treatment. This treatment is designed to optimise the follicle growth and/or endometrial thickness as well as reduce anxiety.

Session 2 - After Ovulation

Well functioning tubes are necessary in natural conception and IUI, but not for IVF. After the injection to promote ovulation (or natural ovulation), this acupuncture session aims to be useful in facilitating the movement of the ovum in the tubes and preventing spasm of the fine muscles in the walls of the tubes.

Session 3 - Good uterine lining

Studies during IVF have shown that pre ovulatory endometrium thickness and ultrasound appearance is predictive of embryo implantation results. Anything less than 9-mm thickness, is associated with about a 5-fold reduction in live birth rate per embryo transfer. Women with poor development have a history (thus far) unexplained IVF failure or early recurrent miscarriage. The same can hold true for IUI procedures, even if an embryo transfer is not part of the procedure.

If the embryo is a strong one, and the stage and extent of development the endometrium is good, it is expected to produce a success implantation. We recommend an acupuncture session to help influence blood flow to the uterine lining the hope of encouraging implantation.

Session 4 & 5 - The waiting period

In the weeks after the embryo transfer we recommend two weekly acupuncture treatments before you take a pregnancy test.
