About Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is one modality within the broad scope of traditional Chinese medicine, which also includes acupuncture, massage (tuina), breathing exercises (qi gong), tàijí quán and dietary therapy.

At the clinic patients will receive a personalized comprehensive health assessment from Jo, and where necessary lab testing (blood, saliva, breath, stool or urine) and a combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicines, supplements, dietary and lifestyle changes.

Jo uses combinations of more than 300 herbs derived from seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark and flowers for the treatment of disease and the maintenance of good health. Each herb has individual healing properties that differ when used in conjunction with others.

The Chinese tradition has developed its own diagnostic framework which needs intense study and clinical training. The art of treatment with Chinese herbal medicine is to choose a formula (a combination of herbs) which matches the pattern of disharmony of the individual, and to modify the formula to accommodate changes in the course of treatment.

Herbal medicine should not be confused with homeopathy: they are entirely different systems of medicine. Homeopathy normally uses extremely dilute dosages of many different substances which may include plants.

How are herbs taken?

Herbal medication is specially prepared for each patient. The herbs are usually drunk as an infusion from powder once or twice a day, though many can be taken in tablet form.

Recent stories in the media have cast doubt on the safety of some imported herbs. Jo uses only the highest quality herbs, dispensed under strict supervision by a reputable herbal company, which is a member of the Chinese Medicine Association of Suppliers (CMAS). Many have been used in medicine for over 1,000 years. Prescribed and used appropriately, they are safe and have few side effects.

Chinese medicine can be used by people of any age or constitution, including during pregnancy. Jo will take any previous or current illness or medication into account before prescribing herbs to you.
